Commonwealth and Council is an important Los Angeles art gallery founded in 2010 by artist and curator Young Chung. Originating as an informal artist residency in Chung’s apartment in historic Filipinotown, the gallery was transformed into a public space on weekends, which then migrated to Koreatown in 2011 due to its growing recognition.
The gallery’s name pays homage to its inaugural location at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Council Street. In 2018, art lawyer and writer Kibum Kim joined as co-director, further solidifying the gallery’s dedication to presenting cutting-edge and thought-provoking art. The gallery has been recognized for its contributions to the alternative art scene in Los Angeles and was featured in The New York Times in 2024.
